நோக்கம் · Why we use these sources
தமிழ் மக்கள் அனைவருக்கும், குறிப்பாகத் தமிழ் அறிஞர்களுக்கும் ஆய்வாளர்களுக்கும், கட்டணமில்லாத, மேற்கோள் காட்டத்தக்க, சரிபார்க்கப்பட்ட நிகண்டு ஒன்றை உருவாக்குவதே நோக்கம். எந்த மூலத்தின் உள்ளடக்கமும் விற்கப்படுவதில்லை; விளம்பரமில்லை; பெறுவது அனைத்தும் அதே திறந்த உரிமத்தில் திரும்ப அனைவருக்கும் வழங்கப்படுகிறது.
Our purpose is a free, citable, reviewed Tamil dictionary and encyclopedia for all Tamil people, and especially for scholars and researchers. No source's content is sold or placed behind a login, there is no advertising, and everything we take from an open source is given back to everyone under the same open licence, with credit to the source on every meaning.

- எடுத்தவை · What we use
- From each Tamil headword page: the Tamil meanings, part of speech, English glosses, synonyms and the page's subject categories. Many of these pages were themselves compiled by Wiktionary volunteers from public-domain dictionaries, most often N. Kathiraiver Pillai's Tamil Moli Akarathi (about 4,400 pages cite it). We do not take images, audio files or discussion pages.

- A large, openly licensed starting vocabulary so that the Nigandu is useful from the first day; every meaning is credited to Tamil Wiktionary and open to review and correction.

- Wiki markup removed; meanings split into numbered senses; part of speech, synonyms and English glosses moved into separate fields; ISO 15919 romanisation added; subject categories mapped into the twelve nigandu divisions; pages that cite books still under copyright held back.
